Description
Up for sale is a lot of twenty seven (27) hardback books in the seriesSouthwest Louisiana Records
compiled and published by the indefatigable Rev. Donald J. Hebert.
They include all the Volumes between 1 and 28 (inclusive)
except for Volume 6
and cover all of the years 1756 - 1897 (inclusive)
except for 1855 -1860
(which are the contents of Volume 6).
(Note: This series continued for about another 20 Volumes or until about 1915 or so. I do not have any volumes after Volume 28.) This exceptionally ambitious reference work is a must have for any serious student of Louisiana genealogy. Several of the volumes have additional content ("lagniappe") in the form of historic documents, cattle brands, landowner maps, scholarly articles, and more. See "Comments" in the list of volumes, below, for details about the additional content.
The (Southwest) geographic area of the State of Louisiana covered in this series remained the same over the years. However, due to the creation of new Parishes (from original Parishes), the number of Parishes included under the term "Southwest Louisiana" increased from the original two (St. Martin and St. Landry) to eight, as of 1897, (St. Martin, St. Landry, Acadia, Lafayette, Iberia, St. Mary, Vermilion, and Calcasieu). [In 1912, 3 additional Parishes - Allen, Beauregard, and Jefferson Davis - were formed out parts of Calcasieu Parish, so that there are currently 11 Parishes in "Southwest Louisiana".]
Although the population of this area is heavily Roman Catholic and most of the records are of Catholic rites (baptisms, marriages, and funerals), Rev. Hebert also included church records of other faiths, including the Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopal churches, as well as Civil Records.

However, the entries of the Volume are for Southwest, Louisiana. The maps were likely an inadvertent error on the part of the publisher. Rev. Hebert published a separate set of Volumes on "South Louisiana Records" [Lafourche, Terrebonne Parishes, etc.], which are not part of this auction.)
Volume 28 (1897), Copyright 1982. xv + 515 pages

Rev. Donald J. Hebert (1942 - 2000) attended the Immaculata Seminary in Lafayette, Louisiana and St. John Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas, and graduated from Notre Dame in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was ordained in Lafayette in 1968. He began his study of Louisiana genealogy in 1970. During the years in which he published the volumes of Southwest Louisiana Records that I am selling, he was stationed first at Eunice and then at Cecelia, Louisiana. Rev. Hebert was a pioneer among Louisiana genealogists. During his career, he published a total of almost 100 volumes, while organizing and recording a vast amount of scarce and fragile original church and civil documents that were previously inaccessible.
